How Can I See My Advisor? FAQs about meeting with your academic advisor

For our new and returning undeclared students, we wanted to remind you of how to meet with your advisor.  Please see below for some Q and A.  You can also check out the CNAS FAQs link for information about how to meet with your advisor, in addition to many other frequently asked questions.

Q: Who is my advisor?
A: Your advisor's name can be found in several places.

Q: What should I do if my advisor doesn't have an appointment available?
A: For shorter questions, please come to their drop-in advising hours (see Myadvising.ucr.edu).  If you have a more complex question, you can start the conversation during drop-in hours, and your advisor can help you with scheduling a follow-up appointment if needed.

Q: When can I see my advisor's availability?
A: Myadvising.ucr.edu will show your advisor's availability for the next 10 calendar days.  Availability more than 10 days out is not viewable.

Q: How long are drop-in meetings and appointments?
A: Drop-in advising is up to 15 minutes.  Appointments are up to 30 minutes. PLEASE NOTE THAT SAME-DAY APPOINTMENTS ARE NOT AVAILABLE AND NEED TO BE SCHEDULED AT LEAST 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE. Drop-in advising may fill up, depending on when you sign in to meet with your advisor, so it's best to sign in at the beginning of your advisor's drop-in hours, if possible.

Q: If my advisor isn't available, should I just pick another advisor who has an appointment available and meet with them?
A: No. This is because each advisor has a caseload of students they work with based on alpha (the first letter of your last name).  If an undeclared advisor has an appointment available but works with students last name E-H and your last name is Brown, you should instead only look for your advisor's availability.  This provides continuity of service with your assigned advisor.

Q: What if I really need to meet with my advisor for a complex issue but all their appointments are full?
A: You can email your advisor with your question, being sure to include your name and SID in the email, sent from your UCR email address.  Your advisor can assess the situation and either reply through email, or let you know when a meeting can occur.

Q: What if I'm in CNAS but I'm thinking about going to a CHASS major?
A: You can schedule a Transition Advising appointment directly with the CNAS Transition Advisor, Elizabeth Jimenez, by viewing her availability at Myadvising.ucr.edu.

Q: What if something unexpected comes up and I can't attend my scheduled appointment?
A: Please go back into Myadvising.ucr.edu and cancel the appointment.  If it's close to the scheduled appointment time, please email your advisor to let them know you will miss your appointment.  The sooner you cancel, the better, so other students also needing an appointment will have the chance to schedule.

Q: What if my advisor was available for drop-in advising, but now I don't see their availability on Myadvising.ucr.edu anymore?
A: Due to the many responsibilities your advisor has, it's possible that a time conflict has arisen, making it necessary to rearrange their advising hours.  We always recommend viewing Myadvising.ucr.edu the morning you plan to attend drop-in advising to ensure availability remains.

Q: What if I need to withdraw from all my classes this current quarter?
A: You can come in any time the advising center is open and ask at the front desk to meet with a college advisor to withdraw from the current quarter. You do not need to wait until your assigned advisor is available for this specific action.
