Major Changes: When, How, Who?

If you are ready to declare a major, follow these steps:

WHEN:  In CNAS, major change appointments should be scheduled during Weeks 2, 3, or 4 of the quarter if you're already eligible to declare the major.  Change of Major Criteria can be found at the following link by selecting the major you wish to declare, then selecting Change of Major Criteria:
http://cnasstudent.ucr.edu/majors/

Be sure to look in the appropriate category of requirements, based on your current *UCR units.  If you're considering a future major change, consider how many UCR units you will have earned by the time you meet the requirements to declare the major, because your unit total may bump you into the next category of requirements.

*UCR units are units earned at UCR.  If you earned AP/IB/Community College units while in high school, before you started at UCR, those units will count toward your total units needed to graduate, but they will not "count against you" in this calculation.  For example, if you earned 20 AP units in high school and you have earned 80 UCR units, you can declare a major based on the Sophomore category requirements because you have earned fewer than 89 UCR units.

If you are considering changing to a CHASS major, please view the CHASS website, select your desired major from the drop down options, and review the requirements.

HOW:  You can schedule a major change appointment by viewing myadvising.ucr.edu.  Appointments can be viewed and selected up to 2 weeks out, so if you wish to meet with an advisor in Week 3 of the quarter, you can view and schedule an appointment starting in Week 1 of the quarter.  Appointment availability is limited, and declaring a major cannot take place during drop-in advising.  This is so the advisor has sufficient time with you to review the requirements, your eligibility, and help you fill out the change of major form during the appointment.
NOTE: Some majors will host major change workshops to accommodate all the students who are seeking to declare the major.  You should plan to attend the workshop rather than scheduling an appointment with one of the major advisors, if such workshops are being held for your desired major.

WHO: You should meet with the advisor of the major you wish to declare.  I will repeat this.  You should meet with the advisor of the major you wish to declare.  The major advisors need to review your eligibility and decide if you have met the requirements to be accepted into the major for which they advise.  If you schedule an appointment with your undeclared advisor to change your major, we will advise you to schedule an appointment with the appropriate major advisor, which will be an inefficient use of your time and ours.  If you look at the following link and select the major you're interested in declaring, you will see at the top of the page a section called Academic Advisors for BIOL, MATH, etc. Scan the advisors listed and schedule an appointment with the advisor who advises for your last name.
